Fluffy Mashed Potatoes

Actually I was not so happy with my Mashed Potatoes of this year’s Thanksgiving, since I usually prepare very soft and super fluffy Mashed Potatoes. But because I spilled boiling water over my face when I strained the potatoes, I was distracted and therefore did not pay attention to add the right amount of butter and milk and in the end caused that it was too long on the stove. So I ended up failing with the easiest dish to prepare for the Thanksgiving dinner.  If you want to get it right, just follow my recipe below, add a little bit more or less butter and milk according to your gut feeling and of course serve immediately! …and never pour any boiling water on your body 😉

My recipe (with the right amount):

  • 2 kg mealy potatoes
  • 400 – 500 ml milk (and optional add: cream and/or cream fraiche)
  • 50 – 100g butter
  • Nutmeg
  • Salt

Peel and cook the mealy potatoes in boiling water until they are tender and already start to crumble. Strain the water. Mash the potatoes and at same time add milk and butter (and optional some cream) until the texture turns fluffy. Add a little bit more than a trace of grated nutmeg and finally season to taste with salt. I will add a lot of latter, because for my taste mashed potatoes have to be really salty – mashed potatoes and of course french fries.
